Women & Children
One of the Avera Foundation’s top priorities is supporting causes and initiatives that support women, children and families. It’s something we’ve focused on for years – including supporting families and care for children at the Avera Children’s Hospital, safe sleep systems for infants, play and art therapy, and more.
It’s our goal to care for people at or near home whenever possible. Right now, our focus is growing women’s and children’s care and facilities at Avera.
Tomorrow’s Promise: The Campaign for Women and Children
Tomorrow’s Promise is a $50 million comprehensive philanthropic campaign to support the expansion of women’s and children’s services at Avera. Our commitment to healthy women, children and families has never been stronger. We have the expertise and breadth of services in place – now we need the space to reach our potential.
This once in a generation initiative is the largest fundraising campaign in our region to support comprehensive women’s and children’s health services, including a six-story tower addition at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. In addition to the new facility, other campaign pillars include expansion of family lodging, and patient and family support. For you, it’s an opportunity to provide a better tomorrow for generations to come.

Supporting Women, Children and Families
A major addition to Avera McKennan will expand areas devoted to hospital care for women and children. Avera McKennan is a home-town hospital for people living in Sioux Falls and a regional referral center for patients throughout a 72,000-square-mile footprint.
- The modern facility will be designed specifically for women and children, with cheery, calming spaces curated for patient comfort.
- Two floors will be dedicated to women’s services, including labor and delivery, a triage unit, birthing suites and a postpartum family unit.
- Avera’s pediatric and neonatal intensive care units will double in size, serving hundreds more children each year.
Creating a welcoming place centered on women and children is one major pillar of the Tomorrow’s Promise campaign. Yet depending on where your passion lies, you can direct your support toward other pillars including:
- Expansion of lodging for patients and families who travel to Sioux Falls for care
- Patient and family support
